Before organized hockey began in Huron there were individuals who strapped magazines and catalogues to their legs and spent many hours on the ice at Prospect Park playing hockey.
Organized hockey began in 1972 on an outside rink in an open sheep barn on the fairgrounds. In 1975 the game of hockey moved indoors (first team to do so in the State) using natural ice at two locations on the fairgrounds. Finally, in 1980, Huron hockey got its first portable refrigeration system, and at that time was the only Association to have such a system in the State. When the fairgrounds needed to use the buildings that Huron Hockey occupied, Huron Hockey set out to have major fund drives to obtain funds to build their own rink. In the winter of 1988 the Huron Hockey Association realized their goal, and played their first game in their own building located on 18th Street SW. The building itself was put up by a contractor but all the finishing work (lockers, boards, etc) was completed by many hours of volunteer labor. The Huron Hockey Rink (Bergman Arena) is truly a labor of love for Huron residents.
In the Summer of 1995 Huron Hockey, in cooperation with the City Parks and Rec. Department, started In-Line Hockey and through funds received from a memorial fund, obtained an all purpose floor to skate on.
